AR Web Design 2019

Hololens Mixed Reality App Design & Development.

For this on-going AR project I focus on developing and designing an interactive AR application for Hololens Mixed Reality Headset, based on the concept of a sensor-based and human-centered AR web interface explored and shown in concept videos.
The application currently responds to voice and gesture.

To show the functionality of designing in the three-dimensional augmented space, the UI hologram is simulating a web interface of an architecture portfolio website containing the studio’s portfolio projects, with interactive 3D objects replacing images of architectural buildings, 2D text planes with descriptions of each project and, on further interaction by gesture input, detailed interfaces for each project.

In the first development phase, a collapsed version of the web interface was designed showing 2D elements. The second phase shows 3D rendered buildings, and responds to voice input.

Prototypes as concept videos

To explore and cover the UI design in the AR scenarios : tracking user’s environment (indoor or outdoor environment, social environment), user’s locomotion (user in motion, static state), proximity, user’s movements (seated, standing) I created video simulations of AR interactions with the user interfaces in all these case situations.

This was helpful to visualize my initial design concepts which were based on the research and experiments done so far: focusing on collapsing and expanding layout depending on motion state, expanding layout elements in more complex objects such as an image expanding into a 3D object, scrolling with opacity, re-sizing layout depending on user’s seated position or proximity, transparent backgrounds in outdoor environment for less obstructing user’s view, motion positioning the interface to user’s movements to avoid intersecting objects or persons in social situations, unsafe AR environments.
